Google CEO on future of AI
In a recent appearance, Google CEO Sundar Pichai promised significant changes to Google Search in the coming year. Hinting at advancements likely driven by AI. "I think youâll be surprised, even early in â25, the kind of newer things Search can do compared to where it is today," Pichai stated.
He addressed Microsoft's recent comments on AI. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that Google should have been the "default winner" in AI. Given that Google engineers developed the transformer models foundational to today's generative AI systems back in 2017. However, Google did not capitalize on this technology until Microsoft and OpenAI's collaboration.
Pichai anticipates that AI models will improve in reasoning and multi-step processes next year but acknowledges the challenges ahead. "The progress is going to get harder. When I look at '25, the low-hanging fruit is gone, you know, I think the hill is steeper," he said. He believes that future advancements in AI will come from "algorithmic breakthroughs" rather than hardware or financial resources. "The area where we applied AI the most aggressively, if anything in the company, was in Search," Pichai added. "I just feel like we are getting started."
Pichai also expressed confidence in Google's Gemini 2.0 models, suggesting they could compete with Microsoft's offerings. Unlike Google, Microsoft relies on OpenAI's GPT models for its Copilot and Bing AI, supported by a deep partnership and substantial fundingâŠ.

The inside story of Apple Intelligence
By the time Apple announced its push into generative AI this June, tech giants like Google, Meta, and Microsoft, along with startups like OpenAI and Anthropic, already had well-developed strategies in place. Conventional wisdom suggested that Apple was late to the game, but the company disagrees.
In 2018, Apple hired John Giannandrea from Google, a move that CEO Tim Cook said demonstrated Apple's foresight regarding the AI transformation. Apple created a new senior VP position for Giannandrea, breaking with its traditional hiring norms. Upon joining, Giannandrea was impressed by how extensively Apple was already integrating cutting-edge AI into its popular products.
Apple decided early on that its AI efforts, branded as Apple Intelligence, would be implemented at a systems level rather than as a separate product. Unlike some competitors, Apple had no interest in developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). "The most credible researchers in the field believe there are many unsolved problems and breakthroughs required," Giannandrea said. "The idea that you're scaling up these technologies to go to AGI is very naive."
"Apple is laser-focused on things that are going to make your day-to-day life better," said Greg Joswiak. This involves leveraging personal information, such as identifying close contacts when searching for a photo, recalling places visited in Maps, or tracking downloads from Safari. To fully utilize AI, Apple needed to organize users' personal information comprehensivelyâa daunting task that the company felt uniquely positioned to handle due to its strong emphasis on privacy.
However, protecting that privacy posed significant technical challenges. "We had to innovate at the data center level, at the system level, at the OS level, at the cryptographic and security protocol level, at the distributed AI inference level... at every level up the stack to do what no one had done beforeâextend an on-device processing level of security that you have on your phone, to advanced processing in the cloud," said Craig Federighi. Apple released ChatGPT in the iOS 18.2 update on WednesdayâŠ.

Google rolls out faster Gemini 2 AI to power agents
Google unveiled its latest AI model, Gemini 2.0, which can generate images and audio across multiple languages and assist with Google searches and coding projects. âThe new capabilities of Gemini make it possible to build agents that can think, remember, plan, and even take action on your behalf,â said Tulsee Doshi, Director of Product.
As AI tools from OpenAI and other startups gain traction, Google is striving to maintain its dominance in search and advertising. While Google has retained its market share, OpenAIâs integration of search features into ChatGPT is increasing competition.
âWe want to build that technology (AGI) â that is where the real value is,â said Koray Kavukcuoglu, Chief Technology Officer of Google DeepMind. âOn the path to that, we are trying to pick the right applications and problems to solve.â Google is incorporating more AI into its search engine, which remains crucial to its business. This week, the company began testing Gemini 2.0 in search and AI Overviews, the AI-powered summaries at the top of Google search results.
âThe founding motto has been developing AI with eyes, ears, and a voice, helping you in the real or digital world,â added WayneâŠ.
