Do This Before Spending Another Dollar on AI Tools
Three weeks. That's how long it used to take us to craft a Profit Acceleration Analysis for a single client—a detailed report that clients pay over $5,000 for because of its insights and strategic value (not to mention the time to research, compile, and deliver).
But then, something strange happened that changed everything.
I can still picture that day. The office was mostly silent, except for the murmur of voices coming from the conference room down the hall and the sounds of someone squeezing out of the last cup of coffee from the coffee dispenser.
I remember staring at the screen, the cursor blinking back at me, almost challenging me to make the next move. I was about to hit the “buy button” for yet another AI tool, lured by the promise of 'better, faster, smarter.'
But a voice inside me, call it intuition or a whisper from the future, urged me to stop.
"Do you really need this?" it questioned.
That's when it hit me. I had become addicted to the allure of new AI tech.
As soon as I read about some new-fangled gen AI tool, I’d run over, check it out, sign up, and get lost in it trying to figure out how to make it solve our problems. Hours would blow by, and then I’d realize that the promise was more powerful than the product.
In reality, I didn't need more tools. I just needed to master ONE.
Just one.
And the one I had the most time invested in was ChatGPT. So, I decided to spend the next 12 straight hours pushing it to its limits. Experimenting with styles. Experimenting with sequences. Experimenting with plugins. Experimenting with prompt chains.
It was a gamble, focusing on a single task that could potentially flop. But the stakes were high—a $5,000 analysis that led to 6-figure engagements almost 80% of the time.
The cumulative effect of working with AI for the past two years, coupled with at least 3,000 hours of non-stop tinkering with the front end and back end of ChatGPT finally paid off after this hyper-focused 12-hour push.
By the end of it all, I had developed a prompt framework and a series of prompt chains that would change things forever.
The moment of truth was nothing short of an epiphany.
Testing the new prompts was a revelation. The report that once took three weeks of intense research, compilation, and copywriting could now be completed in just three hours – start to finish. The precision and depth were astonishing. It was a clear sign that we had cracked the code.
In that moment, I immediately understood then that the power of AI is not in the tool itself, but in how you use it.
The journey to this discovery was tough. We’d sunk a lot of money into various AI tools and training that promised a lot but delivered little. We burned a lot of time experimenting while failing more often than not. But from that struggle, we developed something invaluable—something we now call Dynamic Prompt Sequencing.
We then built a prompt database in Notion, making sure that the prompting framework could be scaled and shared throughout our organization. Implementing it across our company was a breeze, and the results spoke for themselves.
Our work with AI is ongoing. We're constantly refining the Dynamic Prompt Sequencing framework, adapting it for new generative AI models like Claude, and growing our prompt library. We've even started a mastermind group to teach others about our approach to prompting, helping them streamline their work and accelerate their success.
We've been able to help businesses, big and small, harness the power of AI, not just to compete but to lead.
Before you spend another dollar on AI marketing tools, consider this: maybe what you need isn't another subscription but a new approach to the tools you already have.
Master your prompts, and you master your outcomes.
Here are the essential steps I recommend before spending any more money on AI tools:
Audit your current marketing strategy and tools. Identify any gaps or frustrations. Look for redundancies across tools and subscriptions.
Determine your business objectives. Will new AI technology align or require realignment? Don’t let the shiny object syndrome distract from strategic goals.
Join free communities like the CXO AI Roundtable, where you can engage in peer group discussions about emerging tech. In groups like this, you can get a closer look at AI tools, and their advantages and shortcomings, before you buy them.
Review your target audience. Will this tool help you engage them better or merely compound existing data chaos?
Research prompting best practices. Could existing tools meet your needs with optimized prompting?
Start by leveraging all of the capabilities of the tools you currently use.
Spend the $20 to get access to the immense capabilities of ChatGPT 4. Experiment with their plugin store, custom instructions, and Advanced Data Analysis before buying any additional AI tools.
Document your processes before scaling. Organization-wide usage requires consistent protocols.
Develop a prompt strategy that establishes standards and sets forth a framework that everyone in your organization can easily understand and utilize.
Create a prompt database that all stakeholders can access and share to eliminate redundant efforts and inefficiencies.
Measure rigorously. Define what success looks like and metrics to track.
Join a niche mastermind like the OPTICS™ AI Certified marketing mastermind, where you can get access to very focused training and tools and be part of a like-minded community of marketers and business owners who are accelerating AI adoption to ensure their growth and survival.
Invest in specialized AI training or advanced ChatGPT training if needed.
The AI landscape evolves rapidly, so you’ll want to avoid the trap of adopting every new tool. With strategy and mastery, you likely already own the tools you need to succeed.
OpenAI just announced the ability to create custom “GPTs,” which opens up an entirely new ecosystem of features and capabilities within ChatGPT.
Developing our Dynamic Prompt Sequencing framework and our Notion prompt database took extensive trial and error, not to mention almost $300K invested in tools, training, and lost billable time. But implementing it was critical as it was seamless.
We’re constantly improving the framework and adding prompt requests to our prompt database workflow almost daily.
My advice?
Before purchasing any AI tool, make sure the capabilities aren’t already within your reach with existing tools. The extensibility of OpenAI’s ChatGPT will make a compelling case to leverage it to the fullest before investing in other tools.
If your needs are beyond something like ChatGPT, then take steps to ensure your strategy's foundation is solid enough to support it. Will this technology integrate with your processes, or require a complete overhaul you're unprepared for?
Want to dive deeper and learn more about AI? You should join the CXO AI Roundtable. It's a community where you can learn about different AI tools, see how they stack up against each other, and even catch presentations from the people who make them. You'll get the insider’s advantage in seeing what's out there, what's worth your time, and how to make the best choice for your brand.
So if you're ready to get the inside scoop and connect with others like you, join us. Let's explore the AI landscape together and find the AI tools that will give you a massive competitive edge.

Inside Apple’s Big Plan to Bring Generative AI to All Its Devices
Apple was caught flat-footed when ChatGPT and other AI tools took the technology industry by storm. But the company is now preparing its response and plans to develop features for its full range of devices. Also: The future of the Mac comes into focus, a cheaper Apple Pencil debuts, and the Vision Pro gets closer.
Last week in Power On: Apple renews its top ranks with a wave of executive promotions. Paid subscribers learned the latest on the Apple car and whether the Quest 3 will affect development of the Vision Pro.
One of the most intense and widespread endeavors at Apple Inc. right now is its effort to respond to the AI frenzy sweeping the technology industry.
The company has some catching up to do. Apple largely sat on the sidelines when OpenAI’s ChatGPT took off like a rocket last year. It watched as Google and Microsoft Corp. rolled out generative AI versions of their search engines, which spit out convincingly human-like responses to users’ queries. Microsoft also updated its Windows apps with smarter assistants, and Amazon.com Inc. unveiled an AI-enhanced overhaul of Alexa.
All the while, the only noteworthy AI release from Apple was an improved auto-correct system in iOS 17.
Now, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook says that Apple has been working on generative AI technology for years. But I can tell you in no uncertain terms that Apple executives were caught off guard by the industry’s sudden AI fever and have been scrambling since late last year to make up for lost time.
SBalley Team, Cheers!
