Jeff Bezos Bets on a Google Search Challenger Using AI
Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has invested in Perplexity, an artificial intelligence (AI) startup that aims to challenge Google's dominance in the search space. The investment was part of a funding round that raised $73.6 million, valuing Perplexity at $520 million. The funding round was led by Institutional Venture Partners and included other investors such as Nvidia.
Perplexity, which was started less than two years ago, has developed an "answer engine" that uses AI to provide direct answers to users' queries. The company's product is used by about 10 million people monthly. Despite being a relatively new player in the search engine market, Perplexity has seen significant growth, with its website and mobile apps receiving 53 million visits in November 2024, up from 2.2 million when the service launched in December 2022.
The company's CEO, Aravind Srinivas, believes that by directly answering users' questions, there is no need for the traditional "10 blue links" provided by other search engines. Perplexity's search tools enable users to get instant, reliable answers to questions with sources and citations.
The funds raised in the latest round will be used to help in customer adoption and global expansion. Despite the competition from established players like Google, Perplexity's focus on user experience and transparency could appeal to privacy-conscious users and tech workers looking for new services that use generative AI….

Meet 5 workers who quit their jobs to work in AI
Moritz Kremb, a product manager at a German startup for the last three years, always dreamed about starting his own business. Then OpenAI's ChatGPT came out…. "You just knew that this was a paradigm shift technology," the 34-year-old told Business Insider. Then, he got an idea: he could create social media content about AI tools like ChatGPT — and monetize it.
Earlier last year, companies like Meta, Netflix, and Amazon were looking to hire people who can develop AI models, even offering some salaries as high as $900,000 a year. Non-tech companies in the health, education, and legal industries have been looking for employees who know how to use AI tools.
Generative AI has also created new types of jobs like prompt engineers and chief AI officers, and paved the way for a cottage industry of lucrative side hustles like ChatGPT course instruction and AI content editing.
As a result, workers now appear to be betting their careers on AI to cash in. While some left their jobs to start their own AI-related businesses, others are learning a whole new set of skills in order to get a leg up in the job market….

OpenAI to launch GPT Store next week
OpenAI’s long-planned customized AI marketplace will debut next week, according to an email the company sent today to some GPT users.
The GPT Store, as OpenAI calls it, will serve as a repository for custom GPTs, which can be created using OpenAI’s builder functionality. The company posits a range of use cases, including math instruction, learning the rules of board games, and more.
“We believe the most incredible GPTs will come from builders in the community,” OpenAI said in November. “Whether you’re an educator, coach, or just someone who loves to build helpful tools, you don’t need to know coding to make one and share your expertise.”
The GPT Store will make these user-created generative AI tools searchable and shareable, the company said. Plans are also in the works to allow AI makers to make money from their creations, although OpenAI did not immediately respond to questions about how this would work.
Enjoy, SBalley Team!
