JPMorgan Chase & Co. CEO likens AI’s transformational potential to the Steam Engine
JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon said artificial intelligence may be the biggest issue his bank is grappling with, likened its potential impact to that of the steam engine and said the technology could “augment virtually every job.”
The CEO devoted a chunk of his annual shareholder letter to the importance of AI for the Wall Street giant’s business and for society at large. The bank has identified more than 400 use cases for the technology across marketing, fraud and risk, amassed thousands of AI experts and data scientists and begun exploring deploying generative AI, Dimon said.
“We are completely convinced the consequences will be extraordinary and possibly as transformational as some of the major technological inventions of the past several hundred years,” Dimon said in the letter. “Think the printing press, the steam engine, electricity, computing and the Internet, among others.”....

The US Air Force confirmed the first successful AI dogfight
An autonomously controlled aircraft faced off against a human pilot in a test last year.
After carrying out dogfighting simulations using the AI pilot, DARPA put its work to the test by installing the AI system inside its experimental X-62A aircraft. That allowed it to get the AI-controlled craft into the air at the Edwards Air Force Base in California, where it says it carried out its first successful dogfight test against a human in September 2023.
Human pilots were on board the X-62A with controls to disable the AI system, but DARPA says the pilots didn’t need to use the safety switch “at any point.” The X-62A went against an F-16 controlled solely by a human pilot….

At Tiffany’s Flagship, Luxe Art Helps Sell the Jewels
So, let’s say you find yourself in Midtown Manhattan with an hour or two to spare, and you are yearning for some culture. May I instead suggest stopping by Tiffany & Co.’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue?
After a renovation by the leather-clad architect Peter Marino that debuted last April, 58 pieces that he selected by major artists — many of them blue, or silver, or both — now fill the 84-year-old building. Buyers sip sparkling wine or ice water as they try on jewelry. Two are being led to a private room, where pastel-colored macarons might await.
Anyway, for the next two months, you can take a closer look at Marino’s taste by booking a free ticket to “Culture of Creativity: An Exhibition from the Peter Marino Art Foundation,” which is on view in the Tiffany Gallery — an airy space high in the building with excellent views of Billionaires’ Row (the interiors were by Marino and the exterior facade by OMA’s Shohei Shigematsu). You will find almost 70 more pieces. The salespeople are unfailingly polite. “I’m just poking around,” I told one who asked to help. “Poke away,” he replied….
