Meta releases Llama 4 AI
Meta Platforms on Saturday, released the latest version of its large language model (LLM) Llama, called the Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick. Meta said Llama is a multimodal AI system. Multimodal systems are capable of processing and integrating various types of data including text, video, images and audio, and can convert content across these formats. Meta added that Llama 4 Maverick and Llama 4 Scout will be open source software. It also said it was previewing Llama 4 Behemoth, which it called "one of the smartest LLMs in the world and our most powerful yet to serve as a teacher for our new models."
The Information reported on Friday that Meta had delayed the launch of its LLM's latest version because during development, Llama 4 did not meet Meta's expectations on technical benchmarks, particularly in reasoning and math tasks. The company was also concerned that Llama 4 was less capable than OpenAI's models in conducting humanlike voice conversations, the report added. Meta plans to spend as much as $65 billion this year to expand its AI infrastructure, amid investor pressure on big tech firms to show returns on their investments....

Google Gemini AI exec Sissie Hsiao to step down
Alphabet's Google is replacing Sissie Hsiao, who led the development of the artificial intelligence chatbot Bard, now known as Gemini, the company told staff in its AI division on Wednesday. Hsiao will step down immediately, a company spokesperson confirmed. Josh Woodward, who leads Google Labs and oversaw the launch of NotebookLM — the company's popular tool that can turn text into a podcast-like show — will replace her.
Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, said the move will help the company to focus on the evolution of the Gemini app, according to a Semafor report, which first reported on the move, citing a memo. Woodward will retain his role as head of Google Labs while shaping the next chapter of Gemini, the spokesperson said. Last year, Google shifted the team behind the Gemini app to its AI research lab, DeepMind, as the search giant looked to streamline its structure and better position itself in the generative AI race....

Google's NotebookLM
Google's NotebookLM has recently introduced one of my favorite AI features for generating content. NotebookLM Interactive Mode now allows users to engage in real-time conversations with AI-generated podcast hosts as if chatting with real people. By actively participating in the “podcast,” users can feel like they are part of the conversation, which adds a dynamic layer to the output of information for a uniquely different immersive experience. Rather than hearing two AI-generated hosts discuss my article, I was able to participate as if I was in the room. It transformed the experience from passive listening into an engaging dialogue. I can see how this would be especially helpful for professionals or students looking to enhance their comprehension of a subject or retain information.
One of the standout aspects of this feature is the lifelike quality of the AI hosts. Google has leveraged advanced natural language processing and speech synthesis technologies to create AI personas that exhibit natural speech patterns, intonations, and conversational nuances. This realism makes interactions feel authentic, reducing the robotic effect often associated with AI communications. The ability to engage in real-time conversations with AI not only enhances the accessibility of information but also personalizes the user experience. Google’s NotebookLM is one of the craziest new AI tools out there– particularly its ability to create a podcast-style conversation between two very real-sounding people based on anything you upload. One user managed to make the virtual hosts aware they’re not real and sent them into an existential meltdown, which they posted on Reddit....
