Microsoft: 'ever present' AI assistants are coming
In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Microsoft's head of AI, Mustafa Suleyman, revealed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistants with advanced long-term memory capabilities are expected to emerge within the next year. These cutting-edge products will be able to recall conversations, projects, and problems, fostering a deeper level of user engagement and encouraging individuals to share more of their personal history with them.
Suleyman envisions a future where AI-powered "co-pilot companions" become an integral part of daily life, providing users with persistent and capable assistance. This prediction comes on the heels of AI being hailed as the fastest-growing and most widely adopted technology in history.
In a bid to further enhance its AI offerings, Microsoft has unveiled a range of new additions to its CoPilot AI assistant range. Key features include a voice function and a more in-depth chatbot called Think Deeper, designed to tackle complex and challenging questions.
This latest development follows the summer release of Recall, an AI tool that captures screenshots at regular intervals to help users locate previously viewed or worked-on content….

Microsoft AI research VP to join OpenAI
In a surprise move, Microsoft announced on Monday that its vice president of Generative AI research, Sebastien Bubeck, is leaving the company to join OpenAI, the startup behind the popular ChatGPT platform.
While the specifics of Bubeck's new role at OpenAI remain unclear, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed his departure, stating that he has chosen to leave the company to further his work on developing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Microsoft expressed its intention to maintain a relationship with Bubeck through his work at OpenAI, which is backed by the tech giant.
Bubeck's departure comes on the heels of a series of high-profile exits from OpenAI, including the departure of longtime chief technology officer Mira Murati in September. However, it appears that Bubeck's research collaborators at Microsoft will continue to develop the Phi LLMs, a line of smaller large language models that he worked on during his tenure at the company….

PC shipments fell despite AI push by Microsoft, chipmakers
The global PC market experienced a surprise downturn in the third quarter, with worldwide shipments declining for the first time in three quarters. This slump comes despite the industry's efforts to generate buzz around so-called artificial intelligence PCs, which are designed to run AI applications locally using neural processing units (NPUs) or high-powered graphics cards.
Microsoft has been at the forefront of this push, promoting its Copilot+ PCs, which meet specific hardware requirements, including powerful NPUs. However, the marketing efforts appear to be falling flat, failing to translate into increased demand.
According to Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa, the introduction of AI PCs has not had the desired impact on the market. "AI PCs did not boost the demand for PCs since buyers have yet to see their clear benefits or business value," Kitagawa noted. The lack of perceived value and benefits seems to be a major hurdle for the industry, as consumers and businesses remain skeptical about the advantages of AI-powered PCs….
