Nvidia is the heart and lungs of AI
Nvidia, recognized as a leader in artificial intelligence chip technology, has been a significant driver of the recent stock market rally, with its shares surging over 30% from recent lows. Year-to-date, the stock has skyrocketed approximately 150%, contributing to about a quarter of the S&P 500’s overall 17% gain.
The company's upcoming earnings report on August 28, along with its outlook on corporate investments in AI, is poised to be a pivotal moment for market sentiment.
"Nvidia is the zeitgeist stock today," remarked Mike Smith, a portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments, which includes Nvidia shares in its portfolios. "You can think of their earnings reports as the Super Bowl, occurring four times a year."
This earnings announcement comes at the conclusion of a season where investors have adopted a more critical stance towards major tech firms that have not met high expectations for earnings or have made substantial capital expenditures on AI. Companies like Microsoft, Tesla, and Alphabet (Google) have all seen their stock prices decline since their July earnings reports.
Market sentiment may hinge not only on Nvidia's financial results but also on its guidance. Strong indications of continued demand could signal that businesses are committed to investing in AI rather than scaling back….

AI chip business isn’t just about chips
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced its agreement to acquire ZT Systems, a designer of data-center equipment focused on cloud computing and artificial intelligence, for nearly $5 billion. This strategic move aims to enhance AMD's competitive position against Nvidia in the AI computation market.
ZT Systems boasts over $10 billion in annual sales, which represents nearly half of AMD's reported revenue of $22.7 billion last year, according to AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su in a recent interview. Following the acquisition, AMD intends to divest ZT's manufacturing operations while retaining its system-design business.
Su emphasized that ZT's primary value lies in its ability to provide customers with hands-on support in establishing large data centers that facilitate AI training. "What it allows me to say to them is let me help you build your next training cluster, and tell me what’s important to you," Su explained. "I now have a very large design team that can help you do that."….

Top tasks for which AI is used now
A recent survey sheds light on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace, revealing that 68% of respondents view AI as beneficial across the entire enterprise. In contrast, 32% believe its applications are largely confined to specific functions and tasks.
The survey highlights the primary areas where AI is most effective today. Customer service, particularly through chatbots and 24/7 support, leads the way with 69% of respondents identifying it as a key application. Document review, including due diligence and financial analysis, follows closely at 60%, while personalized content creation is utilized by 54% of participants.
Additionally, more than half of the respondents—56%—indicate that companies are now using AI in software engineering, marking one of the earliest successful applications of the technology.
In the realm of content generation, AI is often seen as a collaborative partner, assisting with idea generation and formatting rather than taking on a fully autonomous role….
