OpenAI Cofounder: AGI Could Be Here in Two to Three Years

OpenAI cofounder John Schulman recently shared some intriguing insights on the Dwarkesh Podcast about the timeline for achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the point at which AI can reason like humans.

Schulman suggested that AGI could be realized in as little as two to three years, with AI models potentially handling entire coding projects autonomously within one to two years. He even speculated that AI might replace his own job in about five years.

To reach these milestones, Schulman emphasized the importance of training models to perform multi-step tasks without losing focus, a challenge given that most current training data is geared towards single-step tasks. Additionally, enhancing models' reasoning abilities will require reducing the computational power needed both for making predictions and for learning during the training process….

Microsoft readies new AI model to compete with Google, OpenAI

Microsoft is stepping up its game in the AI arena by developing a new, in-house language model, dubbed MAI-1, that aims to rival the heavyweights from Alphabet's Google and OpenAI. With billions already invested in OpenAI and its ChatGPT technology integrated into Microsoft's productivity software, the tech giant is no stranger to the generative AI race.

The MAI-1 project is being spearheaded by Mustafa Suleyman, a recent hire who co-founded Google DeepMind and previously led AI startup Inflection. Although MAI-1 isn't a direct carryover from Inflection, it may leverage some of the startup's training data. The model, which boasts around 500 billion parameters, is set to be significantly larger and more costly than Microsoft's earlier open-source efforts. While its exact applications are still up in the air, the model's performance will ultimately dictate its future role….

OpenAI Is Readying a Search Product to Rival Google, Perplexity

OpenAI is reportedly working on a groundbreaking feature for ChatGPT that would enable the AI to search the web and provide answers with cited sources, potentially positioning it as a direct competitor to Alphabet Inc.'s Google and the AI search startup Perplexity.

According to an insider privy to the development, this new capability would allow users to receive detailed responses that include references to sources like Wikipedia and blog posts. Additionally, one iteration of the product is said to incorporate relevant images alongside text, enhancing the user experience for queries such as how-to guides.

This move comes as OpenAI faces mounting pressure to enhance ChatGPT's functionality amid a surge of rival chatbots, with search emerging as a pivotal battleground in the AI industry. Perplexity has already made significant strides with its AI-driven search engine, achieving a $1 billion valuation by prioritizing accuracy and source citations, while Google is also rapidly evolving its search experience to integrate AI advancements….
