OpenAI Says It Has Begun Training a New Flagship A.I. Model
OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it has started training a new flagship artificial intelligence model, tentatively not yet referred to as GPT-5, which is set to succeed the current GPT-4o technology powering its widely-used chatbot, ChatGPT. Released in March 2023, GPT has been instrumental in enabling chatbots and various software applications to perform tasks such as answering questions, writing emails, generating term papers, and analyzing data.
The latest iteration, GPT-4o, introduced this month but not yet broadly available, adds the ability to generate images and engage in highly conversational voice interactions. These advanced technologies learn their capabilities by processing vast amounts of digital data, including sounds, photos, videos, Wikipedia entries, books, and news articles.
The digital "training" process for AI models can span months or even years, followed by additional months of testing and fine-tuning before public release. Consequently, it may take nine months to a year or more before OpenAI's next model becomes available….

Google is redesigning its search engine — and it’s AI all the way down
Google is revolutionizing the search experience by integrating AI into nearly every aspect of the process. The tech giant has begun rolling out "AI Overviews," formerly known as the Search Generative Experience (SGE), to users in the US, with plans for a global release soon. This means that billions of users will soon see AI-generated summaries at the top of their search results.
According to Liz Reid, Google's Head of Search, generative AI can handle much of the heavy lifting in searches, allowing users to focus on what truly matters to them. Google's Gemini AI is designed to understand queries whether they're typed, spoken, or captured via photo or video, making it particularly useful for complex searches.
Over the past decade, Google has evolved from a simple keyword search box to an all-encompassing, intuitive search assistant, promising a future with less typing, fewer tabs, and more conversational interactions with the internet….

Meta's AI Chief: AI Models Like ChatGPT Won't Reach Human Intelligence
Meta’s AI chief Yann LeCun has cast doubt on the future capabilities of large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, stating they will never achieve human-level intelligence. In an interview with the Financial Times, LeCun explained that these AI systems lack a deep understanding of logic, persistent memory, and the ability to comprehend the physical world or plan hierarchically.
He emphasized that LLMs "cannot reason in any reasonable definition of the term." LeCun, a pioneering figure in AI, revealed that he and his team of around 500 researchers at Meta’s Fundamental AI Research lab are developing a new generation of AI based on "world modeling," an approach where the system builds an understanding of its environment similar to human cognition.
He estimated that it could take up to a decade to achieve human-level AI using this innovative method….
