Perplexity AI bids to merge with TikTok
U.S.-based search engine startup Perplexity AI has submitted a bid to merge with TikTok’s U.S. operations, according to a source familiar with the matter. The offer, sent on Saturday to TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance, comes as TikTok faces a potential ban in the United States if it fails to sever ties with ByteDance.
Under the proposed deal, Perplexity AI would merge with TikTok U.S. and form a new entity in collaboration with additional partners. The structure would allow ByteDance’s current investors to retain their equity stakes while enhancing Perplexity by integrating TikTok’s video content and user base.
Perplexity AI is optimistic about the bid, arguing that a merger—rather than a sale—might meet stakeholders approval. The startup specializes in search tools that deliver rapid, sourced answers using AI. Including technology from OpenAI to Meta Platforms’ Llama. TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the proposal. AI-assisted search has been viewed by investors as one of Google’s key risks, as it potentially changes the way consumers access information online....

According to sources, the briefing will focus on OpenAI's cutting-edge work on chatbots capable of PhD-level thinking. These sophisticated AI systems are rapidly evolving, with expectations that they will soon be able to perform complex tasks such as building a fully functional app from scratch or engaging in long-term planning.
The presentation is expected to showcase "PhD-level super agents" – AI systems that can tackle intricate problems with the expertise of a doctoral graduate. OpenAI 'o3 mini' reasoning AI to launch soon
OpenAI, has finalized a version of its cutting-edge reasoning AI model, o3 mini. With plans to launch it in just a couple of weeks, according to CEO Sam Altman. The Microsoft-backed company has taken user feedback into consideration and will release the application programming interface (API) and ChatGPT simultaneously.
This move comes as OpenAI ramps up its efforts to create smarter models capable of tackling complex problems, intensifying competition with tech giants like Google. In December, the company announced it was testing reasoning AI models, o3 and o3 mini, with plans to launch the latter by the end of January, followed by the full o3 model.
The o3 mini model is the latest in a series of advancements from OpenAI, which has been pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence. In September 2024, the company released its o1 AI models, designed to spend more time processing queries to solve harder problems. These models have demonstrated the ability to reason through complex tasks and solve more challenging problems than previous models in science, coding, and math.
OpenAI also introduced a beta feature called Tasks to ChatGPT earlier this week, marking its entry into the virtual assistant space. This move puts the company in direct competition with established players like Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa….
