Two AIs are better than one
On May 13th, OpenAI introduced its latest model, GPT-4o, which Mira Murati, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, hailed as the “future of interaction between ourselves and the machines” due to its ability to engage in expressive, humanlike conversations.
Just a day later, Demis Hassabis, head of Google’s AI initiatives, showcased Project Astra, an early version of what he describes as the company’s effort to create “universal AI agents that can be helpful in everyday life.” These launches are part of a broader trend in the tech industry to enhance the utility and engagement of chatbots and other AI products.
For instance, GPT-4o or Astra can recommend museums, galleries, and restaurants based on pictures or videos of art or food you enjoy. A promising approach to making AIs perform complex tasks is through multi-agent systems (MAS), where teams of AIs collaborate, assign tasks, and solve problems collectively without constant human oversight. Chi Wang, a principal researcher at Microsoft Research, notes that teams outperform solitary AIs by breaking down jobs into specialized tasks, much like human teams do. An example of this is Camel, an open-source MAS framework developed by KAUST, which allows users to input tasks….

Anthropic’s AI now lets you create bots to work for you
Anthropic is rolling out a new feature for its AI chatbot Claude, dubbed "tool use" or the more technical "function calling," which allows users to create personalized solutions like email assistants or bots for purchasing shoes by connecting to any external API.
This essentially turns Claude into an "AI agent," capable of analyzing data to offer tailored product recommendations based on purchase history or providing swift customer service responses, such as order tracking and real-time tech support.
The tool also extends its capabilities to image processing, enabling applications like virtual interior design consultants that can analyze room photos and suggest personalized decor ideas. All that's needed to get started is API access and some coding know-how….

Apple Plans AI-Based Siri Overhaul to Control Individual App Functions
Apple Inc. is gearing up to revolutionize its Siri virtual assistant with cutting-edge artificial intelligence, enabling users to control individual app functions through voice commands, according to insiders.
This significant upgrade, which involves a complete overhaul of Siri’s software using Large Language Models, will be a cornerstone of Apple’s ambitious AI strategy set to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10. The revamped Siri will offer unprecedented control over iPhone and iPad features, from opening specific documents and managing emails to summarizing articles and editing photos.
This initiative is part of a broader suite of AI-driven features, including voice memo transcriptions, website recaps, automated message replies, and AI-generated emojis, spearheaded by Apple software chief Craig Federighi. While Apple has remained tight-lipped about the specifics, the enhancements promise to make Siri a more integral and powerful tool for users….
